5.1 Multi-Channel Audio Contribution is an emerging requirement with several broadcasters successfully bringing Surround Sound to the homes of radio listeners. To date, the content transmitted has been largely Classical or Jazz. Fundamental to the process is retaining the phase relationship between the 6 channels, which, if correctly engineered will immerse the radio audience in a true surround sound experience.
There are two conflicting views on how to achieve the process of transporting 6 channels of audio i.e. Discrete or Mixed Down to a 2 channel. Over the past 3 years, APT has successfully been involved in several projects using both principles.
Deployed primarily in Europe, several public service broadcasters use the WorldNet Oslo connected to an E1 circuit. Vital to these projects is the phase synchronization between 3 audio cards (6 channels). Additional audio cards are also used to pass a stereo feed and an engineering talkback channel for communications.
